Math
- Read How to Read Mathematics [pdf]
- Bring a question, puzzle, or idea in mathematics that you’ve found interesting or confusing to discuss.
- If you’re using something other than Saxon and would like help planning out your year, please bring your textbook with you.
Latin
💡 In language learning, it’s especially important to practice every day. Try to spend 30–45 minutes each day working on Latin (by reading, listening, speaking aloud, etc.)
- Listen to Capitulum I of Familia Romana while following along yourself in the text.
- Read Capitulum I aloud yourself. Consult the map and the notes in the sidebar to help yourself understand the text.
- Read the Pensa at the end of the chapter aloud and fill in the appropriate answers orally.
- It’s good to repeat these activities each day as you are able.
Science
- Read Chemistry Module 1 up to “Making Measurements”
Reasoning
- Read the Music Theory introduction.
- Discuss with a parent: What is music?
- Think about some of the musical pieces you’ve studied before — what made them beautiful. [Optional: bring a 1-2 minutes recording (or excerpt) of a piece of music you think is beautiful to share.]
Discussion notes:
- What makes an octave and why?
- What kinds of things have to be recorded to describe music?
Literature
- Read Chapter 1 of The Roar on the Other Side (TRotOS).
History
- Read the New York Times Article “Two States. Eight Textbooks. Two American Stories.” If you have trouble accessing the article, you can get full access by going here first, and then clicking on the “Featured Article” link at the top of the page.
- Read Kidd’s American History: Introduction and Chapter 1.
